The Rockefeller Foundation has announced a $12 million grant to the Africa Public Health Foundation to expand COVID-19 testing and contact tracing in Africa.
The grant will support the Partnership to Accelerate Covid-19 Testing (PACT), which was launched in August by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and is working to establish global partnerships around the mobilization of technical, material, and financial resources in support of expanded COVID testing, tracing, and treatment efforts in member states. Among other things, the funding will be used to increase access to testing in urban and rural areas, strengthen community-level contact tracing, enhance data infrastructure, and accelerate screening in high-risk populations.
“Equitable access to testing and tracing is essential to rapidly identify and respond to COVID-19 outbreaks until a vaccine is widely available to all,” said Rockefeller Foundation president Rajiv J. Shah. “One year into the COVID-19 pandemic, too many people still do not have access to the tools that they need to keep themselves, their families, and their communities healthy and safe. We’re pleased to work with the Africa Public Health Foundation and Africa CDC to catalyze a more efficient and inclusive response to and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic across the continent.”
