Africa Public Health Foundation (APHF) welcomes the great news of the confirmation of Dr. John Nkengasong to lead PEPFAR (The USA President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief).
As APHF, we take this opportunity to congratulate Dr. Nkengasong for this achievement, which is a testimony of the remarkable work he has done throughout his career, with emphasis on his leadership in establishing the Africa CDC, and steering it to become a successful institution in delivering public health in Africa.
The leadership provided by Africa CDC in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in the continent was exemplary and proved to be crucial in mitigating the devastating consequences of this disease in the African countries, still facing the challenges of weak health systems with populations already affected by other major health problems.
Dr. Francisco Songane, Interim CEO says, “APHF played its part in this process, working together with Africa CDC, and I could witness first hand the devotion and commitment instilled by Dr. Nkengasong in directing the pandemic response measures, and providing advice to the African Union Member States.”
It is this impetus he carries to PEPFAR, and we are sure that the success shown in Africa will be replicated worldwide in advancing public health and address the inequities still rampant in many parts of the globe.
Congratulations Dr. Nkengasong.
