The Cholera Genomics Consortium in Africa (CholGen project) held its annual meeting to review progress and shape the next phase of the project. The Consortium (CholGen) convened its annual meeting from 10th–12th March 2025 in Kampala, Uganda. It was a collaborative initiative between Africa Public Health Foundation (APHF), the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC)’s Africa Pathogen Genomics Initiative (Africa PGI) and The Johns Hopkins University (JHU), alongside seven African Union (AU) member states—namely the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Uganda, Cameroon, Malawi, Zambia, and Nigeria. Funded by the Gates Foundation, the project aims to strengthen genomic surveillance, foster partnerships, and facilitate knowledge sharing to enhance regional genomic capacity.

The meeting brought together 70 participants from the Africa CDC collaborators, stakeholders, and National Public Health Institutes (NPHI) representatives from seven AU member states to reflect on project milestones, share national experiences and challenges, provide updates on retrospective findings, and discuss strategies for implementing genomic informed management of cholera outbreaks.

Note: Africa PGI 2.0 is a flagship initiative of the Africa CDC to build and strengthen resilient, integrated, proactive, and sustainable, molecular diagnostic, genomic surveillance and epidemiology ecosystem in Africa.
